WHEN ART MEETS SCIENCE

Nowadays more and more artists (choreographers, theatre directors, musicians, visual artists) and scientists (chemists, biologists, physicists) are carrying out collaborative research and work at international level which merge contemporary performing arts, science and new technologies, contributing to the definition of new interdisciplinary aesthetic paradigms and challenging scientific paradigms. Explora, always striking to push forward science’s frontiers, is glad to support pioneer artists in their forefront research such as:

Momentum

What if you could design and construct a novel kind of soft material that possesses a life-like metabolism? These metabolic material would enable architecture to change over time using local sources of energy and raw materials and respond to variations in the urban environment. Such materials could even perform new functions that are not found in nature and could safely remove toxins or nanoparticles from the environment and process them into safer substances. In the documentary “Momentum”, directed by Robert Styblo, Dr. Rachel Amstrong and Prof. Martin Hanczyc will lead us through the wonder of protocells: precursors to a new kind of architectural building block capable to respond to environmental stimuli. Protocells can be designed to extract carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air and release carbonate into the environment.

Hylozoic Ground

Hylozoic Ground. Picture courtesy of PBAI For 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale we supported the Hylozoic Ground project of Arch. Philip Beesley in collaboration with Dr. Rachel Armstrong and Prof. Martin Hanczyc. Hylozoic Ground is a breathtaking artificial forest which surrounds, responses and adapts to visitors who venture into this mysterious world of transparent tiles and exotic chemistry.
